Work Experience

Over the past three summers, I have been a farm hand at Glen Echo Farms in Charlottesville Virginia. I have done plenty of jobs there, from building and painting fences to spraying or chopping weeds to taking down trees that needed to be cut down. This job may not have taught me too much about communications or what I want to do in the future, but it has taught me plenty of lessons that I will keep with me when I start working in the field I want. I learned a lot about hard work and perseverance, working in the hot summer sun 9-5. I also learned a lot about work loyalty, coming back every summer and making friends with all of my co-workers. So although the farm might not be the most glorious job to have, it has taught me plenty of valuable lessons and I thank the owner every summer for giving me the opportunity.

Another noteworthy experience I had happened in the end of May, 2012. I got the opportunity to shadow Harold Kuntz, who was the sports director for the local NBC station in Hagerstown, Maryland.  It was only for two weeks, but in those two weeks I learned a lot. I learned about the life of a small town sports reporter, and how not much is done for them. The guy that ends up on the screen is not just the guy on the screen, but also the camera man, the editor, and the planner. They have three guys that do absolutely everything they need for the sports segment on the news. It requires a lot of work, and almost being in two places at once, but while I was there on this internship it didn't seem like work at all. And that is another thing I learned during those two weeks: I didn't have to work for ESPN or some other big time station to enjoy my future job. That is obviously the main goal, but if I end up working for a small town station, as long as I get to cover sports, I would still be happy.
